Hurricane Ike Update Sunday 0800

Hurricane Ike continues to track in a southerly and westerly direction taking it further away from Florida’s west coast, however, the Florida Keys hurricane preparations and evacuations have begun. The lower keys, such as Key West will begin the evacuation first, then moving to the middle and upper Keys later in the day.

Hurricane Ike is a Cat-4 with winds of 145 mph.

Based on the Saturday, September 6, forecasts from the National Hurricane Center, the Collier County Emergency Management Department continues to encourage residents to monitor Hurricane Ike closely. At this point there are no evacuations or closures in place for Collier County. The Collier County Emergency Operations Center is monitoring Hurricane Ike around the clock and will advise the public of any changes as soon as they become necessary. While the current predicted storm tracks will possibly spare Collier County of hurricane conditions, it will likely bring tropical storm conditions to Collier County on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It is important for residents to monitor storm updates regularly due to the changing nature of the predicted course of the storm. It is still very possible that Hurricane Ike could strike Collier County and require evacuations and closures.

Persons needing to register with the County’s Special Needs Program may call 239-252-8000 between 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, September 7.

Residents are encouraged to continue their preparations and if they live in an evacuation zone, to review their evacuation plans.

The Collier County Board of County Commissioners will hold a special meeting to discuss Hurricane Ike on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at 1 p.m. in the boardroom located on the third floor of the W. Harmon Turner Building (Administration Building F), Collier County Government Center, 3301 E. Tamiami Trail, Naples.

NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING OF THE COLLIER COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO REVIEW THE STATUS OF HURRICANE IKE AND DETERMINE THE NECESSITY OF DECLARING A STATE OF EMERGENCY

Notice is hereby given that the Collier County Board of County Commissioners will hold a special meeting SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2008 at 1 p.m. in the boardroom located on the third floor of the W. Harmon Turner Building (Administration Building F), Collier County Government Center, 3301 E. Tamiami Trail, Naples.

The Board’s agenda will include, but is not limited to, the following:

A. Updated track information for Hurricane Ike and its effects on the citizens of Collier County.
B. Determination of Necessity of Declaring a State of Emergency.
C. Discuss any appropriate action for the Board to take.

All interested parties are invited to attend, to register to speak and to submit their objections, if any, in writing, to the Board prior to the special meeting.

All registered public speakers will be limited to three (3) minutes unless permission for additional time is granted by the Chairman.

Any person who decides to appeal a decision of the Board will need a record of the proceedings pertaining thereto, and therefore, may need to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made, which record includes the testimony and evidence upon which the appeal is to be based.

Collier County Ordinance No. 2004-05, requires that all lobbyists shall, before engaging in any lobbying activities (including, but not limited to, addressing the Board of County Commissioners), register with the Clerk to the Board at the Board Minutes and Records Department.
